On the first Sunday after Labor Day we celebrate National Grandparents Day. This year the date falls on September 12. Like Mother’s day and Father’s day we also have a whole day dedicated to our grandparents.
.
Miscarriage, pregnancy and infant loss is a family experience and what makes it complex for grandparents is that - they grieve twice. Obviously, for their grandchild, but also for the parents/their own children. Seeing your own child suffer or experience a pain no one can fix on top of no longer being able to happily share in a joyous welcoming is twice as overwhelming, especially for first time grandparents.
There are several ways you can support a grieving grandparent through the loss of a much wanted grandchild. This includes making time to visit or make a phone call. You can also encourage other family members or friends to do so too. Make sure the elder has photos or other mementos of their grandchild that might bring comfort. Most importantly, let your loved one share their feelings. It's okay to cry or feel angry about your loss.
This month, we would like to honor all of our loss grandparents who suffer silently as they try to support their children walk the uncertain journey of family building. You can join us in honoring families by sending a handmade Etsy gift box which serves as a fundraiser for our non profit.
